Playing Trap Hands from the Big Blind

When you’re sitting in the big blind, it often seems harmless to call a small raise. This is especially true if you only have to call a 2X the big blind raise, and you’re holding a half-ways decent hand like K9, QT, J9, etc.
The main advantage to calling a small raise from the big blind is that you get to see the flop for cheap. For instance, if the blinds are $0.25/$0.50 and somebody makes a mini-$1 raise, the cost isn’t high to see some more cards. So the question becomes, “Why not pay this cheap price to see more cards?” The answer is that you could get trapped with top pair or middle pair after making this seemingly harmless call.

Iowans Opposed to Legalized, Online Gambling
Written by Elizabeth Officer on March 24, 2011 – 5:21 pmIt looks that while legislators are open to legalizing internet-based gambling in Iowa, the state’s citizens are not. In a recent poll taken by the Des Moines Register, 73 percent of those asked, where opposed to internet-based gambling. Twenty-three were in favor of legalizing it. Four percent weren’t sure.
A bill which recently made its way to the Iowa legislature would only legalize internet poker. No other casino games could legally be played online. The state’s residents would be able to compete against each other. Local casinos would handle all of the shuffling and dealing via virtual tables.
The bill will be seen by a subcommittee, in a meeting open to the public. Iowan

Greg Brooks wins LAPC, Nets $1.6 Million

The big story heading into the 2011 LA Poker Classic was that Carlos Mortensen was looking for a record fourth World Poker Tour title after already having won the WPT Doyle Brunson NAPC, WPT Championship, and the WPT Hollywood Poker Open. The story coming out of the LAPC Main Event was that Greg Brooks survived a brutal final table to take the title and a $1.6 million prize.
Besides Mortensen, some of Brooks’ opponents included Vivek Rajkumar ($2.8 million in live earnings, 2008 WPT Borgata winner), Steve “gboro780″ Gross (online sensation), Amir Lehavot ($150k in live earnings), and Darryl Fish ($520k in live earnings, may have changed his last name to throw opponents off….not sure though).
