AGA Refuses to Back Rep. Barton’s Online Gambling Bill

The American Gaming Associations (AGA) has publically stated that they will not back Rep. Joe Barton’s (R-Texas) online gambling bill, dubbed the Internet Gambling Prohibition, Poker Consumer Protection and Strengthening UIGEA Act of 2011. They are planning on striking out on their own and crafting their very own federal online poker bill.

Frank Fahrenkopf, AGA’s CEO and President has stated that the organization’s bill is currently in the works. According to Fahrenkopf, the bill would “generate some revenue for the states involved, the states where the bettors are, and revenue to the federal government because there will now be tracking on winnings. People who are winning at online poker will have to pay income tax.”

In addition to the tax monies from the players, the government would earn additional monies via user fees and fines. In addition, each state would have to okay online gambling. They wouldn’t be forced to simply because it suddenly became legal.

The AGA has come out in support of licensing and regulating internet-based poker. However, they’ve never endorsed Barton’s bill. According to the organization, although it “has not endorsed any specific legislation on this issue, we are pleased that Rep. Barton wants to protect American consumers and understands the need for regulating online poker in our country.”
