District of Columbia To Delay Online Gambling?
Written by Elizabeth Officer on July 4, 2011 – 1:44 amThe District of Columbia was seemingly on the fast track to become the first to implement an online gambling system available to its constituents. The District was looking to launch on September 8th. It looks like there may now be a delay.
The Council has decided that September 8th, wouldn’t give the District’s residents enough time to object to the legalization of online gambling. I dont believe theres enough time to notify the residents and get feedback as to whether they want this thing in their neighborhoods, Council member, Evans said.
The bill, which made online gambling legal in the District, was submitted by Michael A. Brown, who added it to a supplemental budget bill. It was approved late last year. In April, the measure became law. The bill would have legalized virtual slot machines, online poker, blackjack and a slew of other games. However, the problem is that no public hearings were held on the manner prior to the bill passing. The first occurred two months after the measure became law.
Before giving resident’s online access, internet-based gambling will first be available in restaurants, bars and hotels. After awhile, the District will allow individuals to log in and play games from home. Verification software would be used to determine whether or not players are based in the District. Those people that are not, will not be able to gamble online.
Individuals under the age of 19 years old will not be allowed to play. No more than $250 can be deposited into a person’s account per week. No deposits can be made via credit card, only via debit cards.
