Exposure to Online Gambling Doesn’t Cause Addiction
Written by Elizabeth Officer on July 22, 2011 – 3:32 amMany opponents of online gambling claim that it is best to keep it illegal because it can lead to addiction. According to the Annual Review of Clinical Psychology, this simply isn’t true. The group did a study titled, “Disordered Gambling: Etiology, Trajectory and Clinical Considerations” It found that not only did the availability of online gambling not lead to addiction but that gambling addiction rates have decreased, even with the legality of online gambling.
In the last 35 years, gambling addiction has reduced, not significantly, but it has decreased. In the 1980s, gambling addiction rates were about 0.7%. Today, that figure has dropped to 0.6%. This flies in the face of the notion that online gambling undoubtedly causes addiction.
This study didn’t set out to prove that online gambling was either a good or bad thing. Even still, it did end up proving that all of the blustering about online gambling leading to addiction, is just that, bluster.
