Iowans Opposed to Legalized, Online Gambling

It looks that while legislators are open to legalizing internet-based gambling in Iowa, the state’s citizens are not. In a recent poll taken by the Des Moines Register, 73 percent of those asked, where opposed to internet-based gambling. Twenty-three were in favor of legalizing it. Four percent weren’t sure.

A bill which recently made its way to the Iowa legislature would only legalize internet poker. No other casino games could legally be played online. The state’s residents would be able to compete against each other. Local casinos would handle all of the shuffling and dealing via virtual tables.

The bill will be seen by a subcommittee, in a meeting open to the public. Iowan’s governor, Terry Branstad, is not opposed it. This may surprise some considering the fact that he is a Republican, a party typically opposed to internet-based gambling. Those Iowa state residents in favor of internet gambling believe that the state could use the tax revenues it generates. The development of regulatory laws was another reason cited by those hoping that online gambling becomes legal. Those opposed to it, mentioned being fearful of increased gambling addictions and underage gambling.

Senator Jeff Danielson, a Democrat from Waterloo, filed the bill in February and believes that there would more support for it if more people understood the proposal. As it stands, the legislature might go ahead and pass the bill but they won’t have the support of the general public.
