If youre new to online poker and wanting to learn some strategy, then the best place to start is with some basic, understandable tips. So those who are busy learning about polarizing 3 bet ranges might want to skip this article. On the other hand, if you dont know why position is important in poker, then you might want to check out the following poker tips.
Position factors into Every Hand
Table position is extremely important in every hand you play. After all, the later you act in a hand, the more information you have on other players when making a betting decision. For example, if you are on the button (dealer position), you will be the last person to act in a hand, thus youre in the best position. On the other hand, if youre under the gun (first player to the left of the big blind), you are in the worst possible position because this player acts first. With all of this being the case, you should play much stronger hands in early position since you have less information.
Pay Attention to Bet Sizes
One of the biggest beginner mistakes is making too large of bets based on the situation. For example, many novices will go all-in when they want to force a fold; however, players unnecessarily risk their chip stack by going all-in just to force somebody to fold. So instead of shoving your entire stack in, you could make a pot-sized bet to force a fold. A good rule to keep in mind is to bet the minimum amount that will get the job done.
Be Properly Bankrolled
Whatever limit a person chooses to start at, they need to have the proper bankroll size. A good rule of thumb for cash game limits is to have a bankroll that will get you at least 20 buy-ins at the particular stakes (in no-limit games). Typical cash game buy-ins are worth 100 X the big blind, so you should have a $2,000 bankroll to play $0.50/$1 No-Limit Holdem. This should give you enough money to survive the variance and learn how to be a solid player. If youre a poker tournament player, its a good idea to have enough money to cover between 75 and 100 buy-ins.
