U.K. Looks to Overhaul Online Gambling

The U.K. Culture secretary, Jeremy Hunt, is looking to drastically overhaul internet-based gambling rules. This is in response to British poker players being unable to withdraw money from their Full Tilt Poker accounts after the company was shut down. They were indicted by the U.S. for money laundering and other charges and the company’s website was shut down. Full Tilt Poker was one of the world’s largest poker sites and the shut-down was a huge surprise.

This highlights why the government is looking at reforming how overseas-based operators are regulated and we hope to make an announcement in the next few weeks, a spokesman for the Department for Culture, Media & Sport said.

To help the government make necessary changes, they have hired a consultant firm. As it stands, any online gambling company can advertise their services and operate without a license from the UK Gambling Commission if they are regulated overseas. This may soon change. By implementing more stringent controls, the government hopes to make internet-based gambling safer for U.K. citizens.
