FBI Shuts Down Major Online Poker Sites
Written by Adam Arthur on July 13, 2011 – 4:57 pmThe online gambling society will remember April 15, 2011 for a very long time. They announced this day as ‘Black Friday’, since it is on this particular day, the FBI closed down some of the leading online poker international sites, existing within the American market. The indictment accuses eleven individuals, who are connected with popular online poker sites like Full Tilt Poker, Absolute Poker and PokerStars with unlawful gaming misdemeanors under UIGEA in addition to bank fraud and funds laundering.
The annexation of the three leading poker sites has stopped all US players from gaining access to these sites. As soon as a player tries to enter these sites, he will be greeted with a message, which says that as per government regulation, participation in actual cash ring games is no more permissible within his region. Nevertheless, these sites will be operating normally outside the US. This creates doubts about the actual meaning of the word ‘seizure’, in the language of the accusation.
Response towards the FBI’s proceedings has been extensive. An UK City market analyst reported to iGaming Business that this kind of a restriction will have a dramatic effect on the online gambling industry. Without a doubt, this is going to create a noteworthy impact on the confidence and liquidity, within the individual sites. The analyst also stated that such an action could also have an unexpected consequence on the sites’ European operations.
According to Hilary Stewart-Jones, who is a business partner at Berwin Leighton Paisner LLP, revealed that conspiracy truth-seekers had long asserted that the apparent coldness of the DOJ was simply to give permission to those one or two high profile gaming online operators to run business. These operators were still receiving profit from United States, so as to accumulate such wealth, so that the DOJ is able to make huge profit, once the pounce took place.
